HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE
MONDAY, DEC. 15th. The Committee met at 7.45 p.m. Present: Messrs Jas King, (voted to the chair), Stevenson, Fedderson, Richards and Preston. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE From Canterbury Education Board asking particulars of subscriptions raised for hot lunches.—Received, already supplied. From same stating that the South Spit school was to be painted as soon as possible.—Received as satisfactory. From same stating a temporary teach er would be appointed to Victoria School vice Aliss Mackay resigned.— The Rector stated it was not necessary to make an appointment provedFrom same stating that the outhouses at Victoria School would be whitewash-ed-—Received.
From same notifying that the extras on the Hokitika technical school would be paid as soon as the High School Board’s contribution was paid.—Received. Mr Preston explained the position in regard to the vote. There had been a misunderstanding, as the shelter sheds had not been erected. It was resolved to hold the letter over till the Chairman returned.
From E. Dixon, teacher South Spit School, notifying average attendance for month was 17.3 out of a nominal roll of 20.—Received.
From Rector, Victoria School; notifying roll strength at 370 average 321. Secondary school 66, average' 61, suggesting school dose on Thursday; asking whether a refund could be made on fares' to Kumara scholars.—Received, resolved that the school close on Thursday, and the Secretary enquire regarding an extension of the railway tickets, i From Canterbury Education Board notifying proposals for dealing with School Committee accounts.—Received.
From same forwarding a copy oi paper in defence of Education reform, —Received and laid on table.
From same.forwarding grants for committee, £42 12s 4d.—Received with thanks.
MISCELLANEOUS. A number of small accounts were passed for payment. Mr Stevenson, for visiting committee, reported that the asphalt should he retarred. Left in hands of Chairman and Secretary to attend to. An apology was made 'for the absence for IVJr T. W. Bruce. The matter of the stje. of surplus roof iron was left with Mr' Stevenson. It was resolved that the next meeting be held in February, the visitors to be Messrs Aitken and Preston.
Mr Preston a suggested breaking up ceremony at the school on Thursday afternoon at 2.30 o’clock, at which tha parents might be invited to attend. It was resolved to fall in with the suggestion, the members of the committee to attend also and address the children. Mr King suggested reviving the school excursions, and spoke of February being a suitable month. It was resolved to enquire from the Railway Department what date would be convenient.
