BEAUTIFUL WESTLAND
s SCREENED LAST NIGHT. I • ' There was a crowded attendance/ i the Princess Theatne lhst night ,t a see the first production of “A Toi & Through Westland”, a scenic and indu trial film prepared by the N.Z. D y partment of Industry and Commere f at. the suggestion of ■ the West!an 0 Chamber of Commerce. The displr y delighted the audience, many of who caught glimpses of beautiful Westlaw especially in the south district, whi< , . they had never seen before. The phot graphy whs the work of Mr ‘A. S. Ta; lor, the Government cinematographe B and he has made an excellent ar varied choice. His work is we done, the arstistic nature of mar ’of his pictures being qui ' arresting. Someone remarked wh< ' leaving the theatre last night that tl photographer flattered W r estland 1 Th is praise indeed, both for our beam spots and for the cinematographer. ’ j The tour opens at the Otira Gorj >r with the passenger-laden coaches ma j* ! ing their way Coastwards. The stri , ing scenes of the Gorge and the e periences of overlanders are capital ] depicted. Next comes a series ’ pictures showing the motor drive fro ‘ Jackson to 'Hokitika by Mr Gooch service. Here are some very pret scenes of the bush clad road. Of Hols e tflca, the Government Buildings ar ’! other spots are shown, as well as i summer bathing frolic on the seabeacl -j a very animated scene. Some of tl b beauties of Westland are*' shown wil b | Fisherman’s creek, bush scenery for ; i background and then comes a bontin . scene on the Hokitika Gorge, one ( i the very special bits of scenic countr - in this well endowed neigbbourhooi > | The road to lake Kanieri with views c ! J the lake, and the charming Doroth ; Falls, add to Westland’s reputation fc ; ; glorious country of great beauty. A] terwards we get views of Mahinapu stream—a holiday resort alas, passin , into disuse in these days of motor can ■Two industrial sections of special an edupative interest were shown. Th bulk of the audience received for th j first time an impression of how bill • timber is handled at Butler’s mill when I • '-m wonderful human machinery act j with such precision, and skill. Anotlie education for many was the care am detail required in the packing of white bait, and this was excellently pourtray . ed at Mr Wood’s local packing works ! People are more familiar with goldmin ing operations, and these were depictec in the orthodox way with s ome interesting views of claims and water races, as well as, also, a fine show of gold, The motor trip into South Westland was labelled “the finest in the Dominion,” and the pictorial representations confirmed this statement. There were many crowded scenes of South WestI land views, which of course only touch the fringe of the southern scenic glories, j Those who saw the pictures for the I first time last night must have marvelled that there is such a beauty spot ! at hand, while those familiar with the south country would know that the views displayed were but a small percentage of the natural wonderland stretching away south, which is Westland’s special possession. The southern tour was full of interest, and the various scenes delighted the audience greatly. The towing of Robinson’s motor car across the Little Waitaha river made an excellent picture, but the incident struck us rather as being evidence for the necessity of bridging the- stream which holds up traffic so often. Excellent stock were depicted On the screen showing the quality of South Westland pastures. The Pulcekura school was an impression for the juveniles present of what a bush backblock school is like, while the farm scene where a tiny little girl was feeding her pet lamb out of j a bottle, was a most delightful glimpse of nature for. the benefit of old as well as young. The Waiho Glacier views were of the superb order, giving an idea ■j{ the might and majesty of our moun- I tain scenery, and showing what a re- I markable asset Westland has in this I rreat gift of nature deposited in such I in accessible spot. The whole picture j vas a delight, and shows bow Westland I cenery compares with that of elsewhere | Purely such attractions arc worth pat- I onising. They are worth advertising | o draw the people, and the Chamber I if Commerce has undertaken a task I .•hieh it would appear is only at the I eginning. They must now arrange to j how the picture all over New Zea- j md. I
