PKEBB ASSOCIATION.-COBVWICmr, • A FIRE, CARTERTON, November 13. A fire at Ahiaokuka, late this afternoon, completely gutted one of the soldiers’ new concrete dwellings, occupied by go it they late of Whakataki- Southey was milking at .the time. It is supposed that the fire started in the un- ! completed washhouse. The soldiers complain of lack of water, and have urged the Government to complete the cottages. The insurance was small.
A LADY TEACHER’S BOND

j Th© Board of Education rescinded [the resolution relative to the bond entered into by a lady teacher of the Training College to teach for three years, and intimated that in the event of her marriage the obligation would be considered void.
CRUISER FOR N.Z. AUCKLAND, Nov. 16,
Mr Massey stated to-day that he has received a cable stating that several important alterations will have to be made in the vessel chosen as the most -suitable for New Zealand’s naval training ship. The Dominion, he says will have to bear the cost of these alterations.
Though he is in receipt of no definite information, the Premier expects she is a vessel of about 2000 tons. The Premier states that a cruiser is shortly coming to New Zealand. This cruiser is going to takle the place of the Philomel .until :New-Zealand is able to. take charge of a vessel of the Canterbury’' type. She may arrive in Major June next.
Mr Massey expressed the opinion that when the Canterbury comes, this temporary vessel will probably be also ,kept on the station here, as a part of the British Fleet in New Zealand waters. , : "sy AUCKLAND BUTCHER’S STRIKE. AUCKLAND, Nov. 15. The working butchers went on strike to-day. A number of shops did business as usual. Over two hundred of the unionists marched ■ from Hobson street to Hgllaby’s big shop in Shorthand street, where the Manager and the Manager of the “A” branch were working. The workers “counted out” the Manager. Then a force of twenty-seven police soon arrived' from file Central Station, and next came a detachment of mounted police in motor-cars. The police maintained order.
The strike is pretty general throughout the city and the suburbs. > Hellaby’s window was smashed by a crowd being pushed against it.
TROOPSHIP ARAWA’S ARRIVAL AUCKLAND, November 1(>.
The troopship Arawa has arrived, She had, an uneventful voyage, except that one soldier was lost overboard on the trip.
