SOUTH WESTLAND NOTES.

(From a' correspondent at Okuiu). There is a now development in our local stock trade. An agent of AVrighf Stephenson and Co,, of Dunedin came over the Haast Pass recently and bought 200 head of store cattle, which had been mustered to be taken up the Coast to tlie AVataroa sale. This v i'll mean another outlet for cattle from this district, and judging from tlie pric-'S paid ,is much in advance of what the AVataroa sales usually averge for similar eattlie. It will also tend to keep prices at future AVataroa sales more m keeping with the mar lee t price further north. For instance, a line of 180 head from this district sold at the September sale at Wataroa, were a week later sold at Arabura with with a handsome margin of profits. Another advantage of this new stock outlet will he that the Haast Pass track 'will be repaired a-iid kept in good order, dlius inducing tourists to travel through ‘to the Coast, and up the Coast northiwards without having to retrace their steps over the same route which tourists as a rule have a strong aversion to. A\ T e have had one or two spells of decent dry weather and some of the settlers liave-'liad some good Kurils, notably Messrs Nolan Bros, who' have just burnt off a 190 acre block, and aro now busy sowing turnips and grass deeds. They still have a 200 acre block to burn, ■so will' be kept' busy for' some time to icome. | Varitfu's settlers arfe also busy putting in crops, . and I 'mustering cows preparatory to handling calves, etc.
