Doridant, of the New Zealand Military Police was tried by a court-martial at Wellington on.a charge of having made false accusations ; gainst Captain Charles Gray, Assistant- Provost. Marshal for Wellington. The accusation was that Captain Gray has been drunk on August Ist., 1918, while on duty. The Corporal was found guilty and was sentenced' to 28 days detention and 1 dismissed 1 from the forces |in disgrace. He lias now been reinstated and granted ail honourable discharge, and also given a 1 years’ pay by tne Defence Department'. Be has also ieceivcd 1 a promise that the record of li’s conviction will 1 lie expunged from his personal life. Captaih. Gray left the service of the Defence Department last year. AUCKLAND-BUTCHER'S STRIKE. AUCKLAND' November 14. The Auckland 1 operative butch'ers decided 1 on Thursday to strike owing to the two week’s notice havrig elapsed without any agreement being reached: To-day- there was a .great rush fist meat; iii the butchers’ shops in anticipation of- a strike of the Hhtchers’ Union tomorrow. It' is understood' that the master butchers will- keep their shops open: It is expected’that no difficulty will lie found in- obtaining a fidl supply of' meat; It is possible, however, that/ no deliveries will be made.

A- bye-election was held here to-day for a Borough Council vacancy, caused by the unseating- of Cr William-'Carr! I'jhrongh non-attendan'eo. R> resulted in the return - of 1 Mrs Ada Redwood. There were three candidates. Air Carr was at the bottom of the poll.
JOCKEY- ELLIS RECOVERING, CHRISTCHURCH; November' 14
Tho report from the hospital on Wednesday regarding- the injuries received .by the jockey-. F. W'. Ellis, .through his fall from Mandrake in the Randolph llandcap, at ißiccarton, was ■very wide of the mark. The only in juries he suffered were a slight fracture of tho skull and a broken collarbone. He is progressing well and has N?rn conscious since the evening-of the eccidfiit, and to-night 1 he is reported to be well on the way to recovery.

It has been discovered that the new American steamer Bellbucke, under charter to U.S. aucl A. Coy., Avhioh brought cargo from Ncav York for Ncav Zealand and Australia is uoav discharging a(. Wellington has about eight feet of water in No 2 hold. The Wellington cargo is not- affected, but a considerable quantity- of other cargo, .for Queensland, consisting of motor cars, machinery and general merchandise have been submerged. The steam er ! proceeds to Sydney to finish ciis-•-'chnrging and then Avill undergo an examination.
