DIAMOND ROBBERIES

MAIL BAGS PLUNDERED

LONDON, Oct. 17

On the arrival of the Aeneas from Australia it wag found that , a registered mail packet of diamonds, weighing 1000 carats, had been stolen, the bag having been c ut open. Apparently it was the work of an expert gang. It « believed that the theft was committed at Capetown, whilst the bag, amongst hundreds of others, was being loaded. The diamonds were worth many thousands of pounds. The “ Daily Mail ” . reports that £BO,OOO worth of diamonds were stolen in London before being shipped by the Merkara for Bombay from Albert Dock, The diamonds were consigned in nve packets. They were insured and conveyed in a registered basket, but were not declared to he specially valuable and were loaded with the mail hags Ordinary cargo thieves who were well informed, and are believed to bo a London gang, abstracted only the dismonds, leaving the other valuables Thirty registered mail hags despatc ed by the Merakra were plundered on the voyage. It is supposed that another gang was on the steamer an escaped at Bombay-
