Sir Joseph Ward received a very cordial welcome from fhe Mayor and a large gathering of cjtizens pn his arrival here to-day. The Mayor referred to Sir Joseph Ward as a patriot true to New Zealand in its time- of trial, and also tq Southland hydro-electrical schemes.

Sir Joseph Ward said that the Government should provide all necessary fittings, costing about £SO per house on the time payment system so that the benefits ef electricity would be available to all at- the earliest moment.
