The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Meeting opened today °in glorious weather, but a fresh breeze was blowing, and it had a tendency to raise the dust. The track was in excellent order, and the attendance constituted a record.

The sum invested on the Cup was £16,147 10s, which is the largest amount fever handled by the tote on any race in the Dominion.

After the big event the Countess of Liverpool presented the Cup to Mr IT. W. Norton, owner of Trix Pointer.

During the day the tote handled £76,291, as compared with £52,091 for the corresponding day of last year. Spring Handicap.—Mushroom 1, Miss Salisbury 2, Colonel Havelock 3. Won by half a length. Time 3.52 1-5. Empire Handicap.—Schnapp 1, Dil:!on Eddy 2, Will o’ tile Wliisp 3. Carlton Granger was called off for starting before his time. Won by a length. Time 4.42.

Staying on beautifully,; the last named drew away, and won .by four lengths from Moneymaker,' Matchlight being a similar distance infront of Sherwood who got fourth 1 money bv two lengths. Time 4.30. Riceartpn Handicap.—Cello Sydney .Wilkes 1, Dean Dillon, Admiral Wood 3. Won by two lengths. -Time 3,42 1-5.

Middleton Handicap—lmperial -Crown 1, Lady Patricia 2, King Capitalist 3. Won by three lengths. Time 4.42 3-5. Victoria Handicap.—Dandy Chimes 1, Legacy 2, Gleaming 3. Won by two. lengths. Time 4.42. Rt. Alban’s Handicap.—Birdwood 1, All Bell 2, Pleasant Mount 3. Won by four lengths. Time 2.15 1-5. Hagley Handicap.—Chid 1, Mnko Mnko 2,'Pitaroa Si Capriccio finished first but was disqpalified for galloping; ■ over the last thirty yards. Time 2.4 c 4-5.
