A BUSH INCIDENT.

AUCKLAND, October 24

The little township of Piopio, 16 miles from. Te Kuiti, -has been in a state of some excitement as a result @f asi incident whish happened there last Saturday night, when a motor mechanic well iknown in the district, was set upon by four men, knocked about somewhat badly, and subjected to the process of being smeared with tar over a great portion of his body, and then, presumably; owing to the scarcity of feathers, being covered with flock of kapoc, evidently abstracted from a pillow or mattress. The assaulted individual, Cecil Bridgen, by name, has his dwelling in a tent at the rear of his garage and workshop. It is said that some three weeks ago Bridgen received a warning from a friend in Te Kuiti, to be on the qui vijve, ajs “something was likely to happen to him.”

RELEASED ON PAROLE. AUCKLAND, October 24. .Several people well-known in Auckland, who were placed under detention by the military authorities during.the war, have been granted parole, pending such , time as the Government arrives at a decision as to what is finally to bo done with them. Among tho persons so far released on parole in this manner are Paul Hansen, G. Kronfeldfi, 0. Seegner and Langgufch, in addition to whom Dr Endletsberger has been allowed a fortnight’s parole on the recommendation of tho camp medical authorities.

REM.UERA ARRIVES. AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. The troopship Remuora arrived on Sunday, morning and berthed at 11 o’clock. The vessel had an uneventful voyage. The southern men left by special train in tho evening. Another Victoria Cross winner return ed by tho troopship llcmuera in tho person of Lieut. John Gillroy Grant, of Howera.
