The Advisory Committee of the- New Zealand Returned Soldiers Association resolved that Government be asked to reorganise the Defence Department so as to ensure that only officers, non-com-missioned officers and other ranks who have seen service in some campaign irrespective of whether they belong to staff corps or. not, shall belong or be employed in the defence forces of the country.

GALE IN OTAGO. DUNEDIN, October 22. A Naseby message states the fiercest wind storm ever felt in this part of Central Otago, commenced yesterday, about 6 p.m., and continued with unabated fury until after midnight. Houses were stripped of their verandahs, and large trees torn up by the roots, particularly at the Recreation Grounds, the Hospital and the vicarage. The front of the bakery was blown into the street while the top of the Fire Brigade bower jsuffered tsimilbr damage. The roof of the “Mount Ida. Chronicle” office was stripped of its iron. The bowling green pavilion was overturned, and a number of tombstones in the cemetery were blown over. The Public Hall a Wcdderbum was levelled to the ground, and the residence of Mr P. Dowling unroofed.

CORONER’S VERDICT

AUCKLAND, This Day.

At the inquest on the death of Bersforo R. Baylv, a returned soldier, the Coroner, Mr Wilson S.M., found-a verdict that a collision between a tram and motor car was caused by Arnold Lecky, driver of the motor car, leaving his proper side of the road to pass a tram car, which he was following. Later, Lecky was charged with manslaughter and remanded on bail of £IOO, and his own surety of £IOO.

A FIRE. TAUMARUNUI, This Day. There was a big blaze early this morn ing at the Roofing Tile and Brick Com-, pany’s factory on Taumarunui-lVJata-road. The fire was first noticed about one o’clock when the building was blazing furiously. Six kilns and a drying room were destroyed. The mach inery in the manufacturing department was saved by the brigade’s strenuous efforts. The damage is estimated at £3500.

SAWMILL FATALITY. NELSON, Tliis Day. Alfred Kenneth Bradley, thirty-two married with two children, died to-day a.s the result of an accident at Ngatimote sawmill. Deceased was adjusting a circular saw when his head came into contact with it.
