Mr T. West, organising lecturer for St. John Ambulance who has been inaugurating classes throughout the several sawmilling districts of Westland reports gratifying attendances at ®imu, Mananui, Ross and Ruatapu. He visits Kanieri. to-night and Kumara on Sunday. He commenced a series of lectures at St. Columbkille’s Convent on Monday. These will he continued weekly for a period of nine weeks. An endeavour is being made to inaugurate a class at the State School. The subject matter of the tuition is one that should be availed of by young and old as the information will prove valuable to every one in every walk of life.

A presentation was made at the Post Office on Wednesday afternoon to Miss E Harvey who for some years has been on the staff, at the telephone exchange, and of late at the public counter, who has resigned her position in view of her approaching marriage. The staff having gathered together the Chief Postmaster, (Mr A. H.Stuart) referred the nine years of service during which period she had , carried out her duties faithfully and well and asked acceptance of a silver supper service in a neat case, as a mark of their respect and esteem. Mr Pratt endorsed the Chief’s remarks, and Mr L. L. Hills acknowledged the presentation on behalf of the recipient.

At Addington stock sales on Wednesday the entry of fat pigs was a medium on?, and porkers were in small supply. A drop in prices was recorded. A united service of thanksgiving and memorial for the work of the nurses during the war and the influenza epidemic ,will be held at All Saints Church on Sunday next at 3 p.m., at which the address will be given by the Rev* P. B. Fraser. The special psalm and lesson will be read by Rev. G. H. Bridgman and the prayers by Rev. A. C. T. Purchas. The united chorus will assist in the singing. A church parade of territorals, cadets, returned soldiers,, and the Hokitika Band will attend and seats also have been reserved to all nurses and Red Cross Workers, including those who so willingly and ably assisted during the epidemic. Those whom Westland residents will have particularly in memory are Sisters Isdell, Spring, and 'Nurses Dixon, Davies and Jamieson. The offering will be given to the Nurses Memorial Fund.
