BOWLING PRIZE MONEY

'.SOUTHLAND'S REPLY TO WEL-

KINGTON. INVERCAtRG-ILL, October 17. The objection raised by the executive of the Wellington Bowling Centre to the amount of prize money to be allocated by the 'South Centre at its New Year tournament was referred to the president of the centre (Mr J. Mac Donald), who stated that, in his opinion, the Wellington body had adopted altogether the wrong attitude. The Soutland Centre, he said, had forwarded its proposed programme to the Bowling Centre some time prior to its meeting in Auckland on August 14th. Later, the secretary of the Dominion Council [ telegraphed to the secretary of the local centre, stating that permission was granted and that the necessary arrangements for a tournament could lie proceeded with. At the meeting of the council in Auckland referred to, the presont council was elected, and ho thought that it was nothing less than “cheeky” on the part of the executive of the Wellington O&itre now to raise an objection, and likewise on the part of the present council to pass a motion in direct opposition to that of the old council. Having received the necessar permission to increase the amount of the prize money to £llO, tlie local entre had completed all arrangement, «;> it had been pointed out, Southland was only acting in harmony with the decision of the old council. The reference made by the executive of the Wellington Bowling Centre that the prizes would presumably he cash, was entirely incorrect. The centre had also reserved the right to alter or reduce the prize money if there. were fewer than 64 entries for the Singles' Competitions and fewer than 96 for the Doubles. There seemed to he an inclination on the part of some of the larger centres to recognise only Auckland, Wellington Chr'stchurch, and Dunedin. Naturally Southland wished to make its tonrnnj ment a popular one, and to establish ) self as a howling centre of importance. W-llingvm could draw upon thf North and . South Islands for competitions, while- Southland had no districts to rely upon unless some inducement were offset!.
