Rev. Thomas King, a Sydneyite, Chaplain to the Australian forces; has been appointed domestic prelate to the Pope.
GALLIPOLI GRAVES. (Received This Day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, October 21. The Graves Commission is considering a report from Sir John Burnett, Architect in regard, to Gallipoli and Palestine gaves in the future. A detachment of eighteen Australians has been despatched to Gallipoli, completing the base establishment there. . The contingent is at present engaged in road making. Everything is in readiness for the construction of cemeteries next spring.
JAPAN AND AMERICA
NEW YORK, Oct. 22.
The “ Times ” Tokio correspondent says that United States ex-Senator [Burton, In a speech, said: “What America asks Japan in the Orient is a fair field in competition for trade and no policy of aggression towards other countries. We only ask that no political control or special pi’ivileges should exclude us from ports of trade. Japan should do everything possible t.' avoid a spirit of Imperialism, which has so disturbed the world.”
CHINESE IN MEXICO. NEW YORK, Oct. ”2,
The •Times” Washington correspondent states that 't is understood approximately three thousand Chinese have been driven from Mexico to Guatemala. The Chinese Government has appealed fo the State Department, which is considering a suggestion that a Government vessel to transport them to China. The expulsion from Mexico is the result of a popular campaign against Asiatic labour.
SEAPLANE® FLIGHT. (Received this day at 9.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 22. Mr Daniels announced two naval seaplanes are engaged in an endurance flight from Pensacola, Florida to New York and back, a distance of 2800 miles.

LONDON, Oct. 21
At the Royal Dairy Show, no New Zealand entries competed in the butter classes. South Africans won first and second prizes for colonial cheese, Hawera, (New Zealand) being third. There were no Australian competitors. New Zealanders were handicapped by having to show old cheese while South African exhibits were specially shipped for the competition.
A MINE DISASTER,

It is feared forty miners lost their lives and many were injured in Levant mine near Penzance, owing to the collapse of the winding engine.
FURTHER PARTICULARS; (Received This Day* at 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, October 21. The entire workings of Levant tin mine extend nrider the Atlantic. The accident, whereby forty men are believed to be killed, owing to the collapse of the winding engine, was due to the breaking of the iron couplings supporting a vertical beam down the shaft and the antiquated form of elavator known as man engine. Small platforms project from the beam at intervals ot twelve feet, and corresponding platforms are placed on the side of the shaft, with an upward and downward movement of the beam, which enables the miners to ascend or descend y twelve foot stages. The collapse occurred when the miners had finished the shift and were returning to the surface. Thus many were thrown headlong to the bottom of the shaft over 1200 feet. A number are still entombed. The moans of the injured were heard on the surface. Nme bodies have been recovered.
BERjVIONDT’S THREAT. 'Received this day at 9.20 a.m.) RIGA, October 21. Colonel Bermondt’s aeroplanes dropped an ultimatum announcing that unless the defence of Riga was abandoned at midnight on Monday, a bombardment of heavy artillery would be opened.
WAGES ACT EXTENDED

Government are faced with increas- , ing demands for continued and heavier levies on mushroom wealth, with rigi economy in expenditure. The “Times says editorially, that ignoble war profiteers who are enriched beyond the dreams of their selfish avarice, flaunt their shameful gains before all eyes, justly disdainful of the Premier’s earlier promises to compel them to disgorge. The country expects parliament to do its duty without slavish adherence to any political banner.
I NEED FOR AGRICULTURE
(Received This Day at 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 21
Hon. Lloyd George addressing representatives of agriculture at Saxon Hall urged a stUl greater increase of the agricultural output. Government were determined to put agriculture on a satisfactory basis, continuing the wartime protection, and enabling industrious farmers to confidently invest capital. If Germany had pursued the British policy of neglecting agriculture, it would have collapsed during the war within a year. We must not take the same chances again, .s we came too near disas ter, especially in 1917, under the submarine menace. During the war, Britain had restored 31 million acres to cultivation. Experts estimated one hundred and fifty millions worth of food now imported could be produced in Britain, thus enormously benefiting exchange.
