The report of a Commission which enquired into the ferry charges at Sydney, urges tile ferries should he placed under State Control. It stated that the fares charged in the past have been unreasonably high. CO-OPERATIVE PROPOSAL. SYDNEY, Oet. 21. The Annual Conference of the N.S.V r Country Press has opened here. A proposal has been submitted to enable the country proprietors to join in the cooperative purchase of paper and printing materials, thus effecting a groat saving.

The Statistician estimates the area under wheat is 3,331,100 acres a decrease of 235,680 acres compared with laet season.

In the Senate, Mr Ferricks referring to the Darwip trouble, said it was caused by a general beliefthat Dr Gilruth was interested in the Vestey •meat trust, and that Carey and other officials appointed on Dr Gilruth’s advice, were "equally interested. Mr Russell promised the closest enquiry into Nauru Island agreement. The Entertainment Tax Amendment Bill was passed. In the Hosue of Representatives, Mr Glynn stated steps had been taken to restore order in Darwin. A warship would shortly arrive there. A bill providing for preferential voting, iii the Senate, passed all stages, i .Admiral Jellicoe’s report states the annual expenditure will vary from four millions during the first year to nearly six millions in the seventh. The report! recommends better lving quarters for men and states Jellicoe was struck by the want of system prevailing in the department.,
