BATTLESHIP P vrt “ ’ AUCKLAND, Oct. 3. The battleship New Zealand, with Lord Jellicoe aboard, sails for Fiji this afternoon. A large crowd assembled on the waterfront and gave the ship’s company ail enthusiastic farewell. Lord Jellicoe’s official report to the Government was completed before the battleship sailed. A fire broke out in the Empire Printing and Box Man'facturing Company’s premises, Adelaide Road, to-night. It evidently commenced in the tippei storey, which was gutted, and the plant on the ground floor must have suffered considerably from water. The Manager was unable to give particulars or the insurances to-night, through the policies being held by several offices. The premises of Simmonds and Osborne, coruial manufacturers adjoined, and tlieir stock and plant also suffered from water. As several wooden buildings were only a short distance an ay the Brigade had a hard fight in confining the fire to the Empire Company’s buildings. GAMING CHARGE DISMISSED. DUNEDIN, Oct. 3.

Mr J. R. Bartholinew S.M., gave his decision to-day regarding the recent charges preferred' against tue water, siders ,that having the use of certain premises they used the same as a common gaming house. The defence raised was that the defendants did not have the “use” of the premises within the meaning that the expression had in tlie Gaining Act, “use,” connoting more than mere physical use. The magistrate upheld this contention and dismissed the case.
