COAL MINERS IN COURT

GREYMOUTH, This Day. At tho Magistrate’s Court, tho Inspector of Awards took action to recover a £5 penalty for breach of the 'Blackball Coal Miners' Award. The action was brought under Clause 29, which deals with absence from work without sanction of the manager, unless due to sickness or accident. Mr
Parle appeared for the Department, and Mr O’Regan for the Union. Mr O’Regan admitted the facts and breach ' and pleaded justification. The Magistrate said it was the first ■ case of a breach of the award. He would ' simply give judgment for plaintiff and ‘ inflict a nominal penalty. He ordered 1 the defendant to pay counsel’s fee of ' £lO 10s, witness expenses £2 18s, and , warned that on a future occasion he would inflict a full penalty of £2OO for
