The Royal Commission appointed to enquire into and report concerning tho CjurtaSment of tlie frailway services since the 2nd of July last held its first );jitting to-day, Mr J. P.j Maxwell, presiding. Mr Myers appeared on behalf of the Railway Department and Mr A. W. Blair represented tho Coal Trade Committee.
Mr R. W. MoVilly, General Manager of Railways was the only witness examined. He totally denied that the ‘‘cut” was due to l any other reason but a shortage of coal. LOSS BY GO-SLOW. WELLINGTON, Sep. 23. According to Teturn ' supplied to Mr Massey by the Secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association, the reduction * in the output of coal for the week through the 'j go-slow ” policy was 8792 tons, making a. total reduction for the three weeks of 24,261 tons.

Colonel Mitchell, D. 5.0., addressing the local Returned Soldiers Association outlined a proposal that twentyfive thousand returned soldiers invest £lO each out of their gratuity, and form a Company to establish woollen niillls, tannery and boot factory for manufacturing standard lines of woollen goods, boots and-, shoes, thus .providing employment for returned soldiers and cheapening production.
