WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee sat at the County Chambers yesterday at noon. Present: Messrs B. Ward, (chairman), J. A. Murdoch, T. W- Bruce, and T. W. Duff, (County Chairman).

The accounts for the month of August, totalling £935 2s Id were presented, examined and passed for payment.

The Westland Cold Prospecting Syndicate, on behalf of which Mr Ziman appeared, applied for a reduction in rent, and also consideration in regard to rates owing to Ward road having cost the Syndicate £505 over and above the grants by the Council and the Government. It was elicited that over three areas of 100. acres each near Lake Kanieri the applicants were paying two rents, one for sawmilling purposes and one. for mining purposes. In respect to the latter it was agreed to recommend a reduction ,of one shilling per acre for one year, and to refer the question of the cost qf Ward road to the Council to deal with. ‘

Overseer Millner reported that the settlers interested in Kakapotalii bridge which the Council proposed to erect under a loan proposal, were not disposed now to sign the agreement to pay the interest on the estimated cost of the work. It was resolved to leave the matter open to the settlers to sign up to 4tli October, after which date if the agreement were not signed the matter would drop. The, Secretary of the Waitaha Dairy Factory Co wrote that the suppliers were not disposed to contribute the interest towards the cost of widening the Settlement road. It w~s resolved not to take any further action in the matter. Overseer Millner reported that there was no objection to a residence area applied for at Dillmanstown. It was resolved to notify the Court at Kumara. It was agreed to join with the Hokitika Borough Council in repairing Mallinapua Creek bridge, cost not to exceed £IOO.
