IN IRELAND.

•rfv Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) 'AUSTRALIAN & N.2. CARLE ASSOCIATION LEVIES ON COUNTIES. LONDON, September 16.

The Irish Administration is making levies of considerable sums over the (disturbances. The various County - Councils are angry at the heavy levies made upon them. They are announced to be for murders and outrages. The Mayo Council is required to pay six thousand pounds. The Tipperary County Council has to pay £24,000. THE IRISH MURDERS. I LONDON TIMES SERVICE —COPYRIGHT] 'Received This Day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, September 14. j The “Times” correspondent points out that the murders in Ireland give no evidence of a central direction, and are - attributable solely to local secret societies. Official Sinn Feinners strongly oppose crime, and view the situation with silent anxiety, but are afraid to repudiate the young physical force section, lest they destroy the solidarity which is regarded as vitally indispensable. Some Prelates and priests condemn the outrages, but- the results aro inadequate, owing to the current tendency of the countryside to believe that crime is pardonable, when committed ■in a nation’s name. The usefulness of the Government proclamation is questionable. Ireland grows hourly more distrustful and the settlement more difficult.

Sir Horace Plunkett in a letter to the “Times” declares the Irish Government has proved its incapacity to deal with the position.
