1 DREDGE KAIONE. WANGANUI, Sep. 14. A long awaited and important event in the history (of Wanganui eventuated on Saturday afternoon last when the arrival of the new dredge “Kaione,” which, being interpreted, means “sand eater,” was celebrated. The Chairman of the Harbour Board estimates that in a month there will be another foot of water in the river channel, which will enable ships to come right up to the wharf and work will’be contnued until the maximum depth is obtained. The Kiaone is what is known as a trailing suction dredger of stern wheel type, with a capacity of 600 cubic yards, and capable of dredging to a depth of forty feet.
