STAFFORD NEWS.
(Our Own Correspondent.) On Saturday afternoon last the Awatuna school building was completely destroyed by fire. It is supposed the fire was caused by sparks from burning gorae and scrub nearby. During the strong dry north east w'inds last week, numberless fires were burning in all directions and several dwellings were i mperilled; amongst -them (the residlencc of Mr Paul Arnerich of Tunnel Terrace, which was only saved from destruction by the energy displayed by himself and neighbours in beating out the flaming ferns and scrub.
Quite a number of people have been j]’ with severe colds, in two instances :•!. the family were suffering from ihat. cause, and I regret that our worthy friend, Constable Carroll is now completely laid up since Saturday w'ith tnat complaint, and has had to seek Dr Teiclielmann’s aid. When visiting the Old Men’s Home at Kuinara on Sunday, many of the inmates expressed to me their deep regret that Mr and Mrs Phillips were retiring fioni their positions of Master and Matron of tho institution. It is evident that these good people have endeared themselves to the old people by their sympathy, kindness, and attention.
When one sees so many aged people who are unable to entirely help themselves, it appears to a visitor, that the Master should have the assistance of a Warder, or some kindly strong man t, help him, because it is not only during the day his services are needed but frequently at night, and this really means that one man has been doing two men’s work.
j I hope it may not bo considered a presumption on my part to write thus; but being an old West Coaster, I feel justified in expressing my opinion on this matter.
Tho‘ clad in leather, wool, and fur, All airmen risks of cold incur, As flying high or flying low They flit their biplanes to and fro j Their lungs and throats protection need When planing at abnormal speed, Protection which they all assure, By taking Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure.
