IRON INDUSTRY
SHORTAGE OF COKE. DUNEDIN, Sop. 10. Dunedin ironmasters are now reliever! from the long sustained, difficulty caused by the shortage of raw material during the war. Supplies of iron have arrived from India, and there is more afloat from the same place, whilst two shipments of “pig” have come from America, and consignment's of “sheet” have been landed from Canada. The trouble is now about coke, consequent on the shipping dislocation. The foundries cannot possibly get pn without coke. Speaking on this subject to a reporter to-dav, an employer said: “ We are just borrowing from one another as wo can get it, a hag or two at a time.. For a month or more we
•ve been expecting every week to be our last. The foundries have managed :c struggle along, and so far our firm hvo not bad to reduce bands, but it is a precarious existence for the business.
