Mr Seddon M.P. in response to an enquiry has been informed by the Public Works Department that though there has bo'e-n considerable but unavoidable delay in commencing the Little Wanganui protective works in South Westland, the plant a »d mat-oral for the work are now on the site, and it is .hoped to start at once with the undertaking. Advice has been received of the death at Hanmer of Mr Edward Scott, cxInspector of Schools, under the Grey Education Board. The late Mr Scott was born in Noarthumberland, England, in the year 1864, came to New Zealand in 1874, and received his primary education in the Taylorvillc school Mr Scott’s first appointment was that of teacher of the No Town School, and he was afterwards second assistant of the Greymoutli District High School. In 1887, he was appointed first headmaster of the Dobson School, then to Taylorvillc school, and later Inspector under the Grey Board. Turpentine has again advanced in price (states an Auckland pper), with the result that values have practically doubled in a month. The wholesale price a month ago was 8s 6d per gallon. On August 7th it was 9s lOd, and to-day American quotations have been received at 12s 4d, c.i.f. and e. New Zealand. This last price is based on a dollar conversion rate of 4.7, but as rates have declined, and there will be 30-dollar freight, it is considered that the wholesale price here will run from 15s. to 16s. a- gallon. Merchants can give no explantion of the reason for the rise, save that it is stated that large interests in America control the spirit. The death took place rather suddenly at an early hour yesterday morning of Mr John McGrath, eldest son of Airs AloGrath, of Threadnecdle Street, Greymouth. Deceased who was about 43 years of age, took ill about eight hours before, but never rallied. /He leaves besides his mother, four sisters and two brothers.

The West Coast Rugby Union representative team leaves Greymouth tonight to play for the Seddon Shield at Westport to-morrow.
