The committee of the Westland Racing Club meets to-night at 8.30 o’clock.

The annual meeting of the Arahura Dairy Factory Coy. Ltd., will be held on Saturday 6th. September at 3 p.m. at the County Chambers, ITokitika.

The Australian League team now on tour in New Zealand are coming overland to-day and play the West Coast at. Greymouth, to-morrow afternoon.

The quarterly meeting of the U.A.O.D. Westland Lodge, No 89 takes place on Thursday evening. A full attendance is desired as the business is important.

Pollard’s Pictures at the Princess Theatre last evening presented ail (attractive programme. The Gazette was decidedly interesting and was ‘followed by an amusing comedy. Then came the star picture “Peck’s Bad Girl,” with Mabel Normand in the chief role. This was most entertaining and was generally enjoyed by the large audience.

An old and respeted resident of Kumara, Mr Owen Roberts passed away at the Westland Hospital on Wednesday last, at the ripe old age of 76 years. For many years the deceased followed the occupation of a miner, hut for some considerable time past has been incapacitated from work. Two daughters and one son are left.

The death of Mr Stephen E. Wisdom of Cohden took place’ on Sunday morning at Grey Hospital. He was a native of Halifax and a' man of rare intellectual capacity, retaining that faculty till the last. Deceased had attained the ripe age of 92 years, and leaves a brother, Mr Alonzo Wisdom, (sen.), and other relatives. The Government have decided to release the Jugo-Slavs from the obligat’oti to render further national service. These men have been compelled to work on roads and railways under the Public Works Department, being paid currentrates of wages. They have not been treated as prisoners and their personal liberties have not been interfered with except that they .have been compelled to remain in particular localities and to accept the Government employment arranged for them.

At the annual meeting of the Grey Jojckey Club held last evening the annual report and balance sheet was adopted. Mr M. Hannan was elected a life honorary member. It was made a recommendation to the incoming Committee that the Club race three days at New Year and that a hurdle race be included in each day’s programme. A motion was also carried that, it he n recommendation to the incoming Committee that the Grey Cnp be run over one mile. This was carried by a majority of four. A recommendation to do away with the issuing of 10s.' tickets at the totalisator was after a deal of general discussion, lost by a small margin.
