| PREPARING FOR ELECTIONS
POSTAL OFFICERS TO ASSIST
In reply to inquiries regarding the reparation of the electoral lists foi the literal election, the Hon. W. H. Heres, Acting-Minister in Charge of the lectoral Department, informed a Welngton “Post” reported that the print- , K of the main roll has now been.com•enced in a number of centres, and the M there should he available ror public iformation by the first week in August. In the balance of the electorates it is anticipated that by the end f this week the rolls will be in tne lands of the printers, so that, unless ny unforseen circumstance arises, ft ■i expected that the whole bf the rolls o; the dominion will he available f Ol üblic use by August 14. Th c electoral bureaux which were «- ablishcd in the four centres during the •ecent licensing poll were found to bo re valuable that the Minister lias decided | .hat these shall again b e opened for the convenience of electors as from the first proximo until the general election is 3V Tlie Secretary of the General Post Office has agreed to assist the Electora Department in every way m regard to the enrolment of electors for the coming general election. M electorate similarly to the .nethod Mlowed in the delivery of letters T 1 j will bo suppied with a copy, of the mam roll, and when it is found that people are not on the roll, their duty will be to get these enrolled and where necessary leave claims for enrolment, arranging to return at an hour when the elector will be available. In some of the larger towns the postmen will also be- relieved of their ordinary duties and will be wholly engaged on tlio work of the enrolment of electors. In the sma - ler towns tlie postmen will enrol electors when making their ordinary rounds, while in the small districts where there j are not postmen, the postmasters will be , responsible for this work- In this way , the enrolment of electors in all parts of the dominion will be ensured. Arrangements have also been made •)> the secretary of the General Post Office for a specially qualified officer of his staff to visit all centres to advise postmatsers in regard to the details cl the work, so that there may not be any hitch at any times. Mr Hcrries adds that lie is satisfied from the interest that is being displayed in the work by Mr Morris and his officers in co-opera-tion with the Electoral Department, that very satisfactory results will he obtained.
