AUCKLAND HOSPITAL

MILITARY CONTROL OF ANNEXE.

AUCKLAND, July 12

Resentment against the control of the hospital annexe passing to the military authorities was expressed by the Hospital Board to-night. The chairman said the military appeared to intend to take over the whole management of the annexe, yet Sir James Allen had told him that the Board's, medical superintendent must be the head of it, as long as the Board’s nurses were engaged there. It seemed that the time, was rapidly coming when the Board should hand over the annexe to the military authorities, and let them manage it. There were seven military doctors, there, in addition to the superintendent. Those seven officials were drawing salaries aggregating not less than £4OOO per year.

MOUNT EDEN BONFIRE

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST PREMATURE BLAZE.

AUCKLAND, July 15,

The Mount Eden bonfire is in course of re-erection, and raiding parties, whether they be larrikins or pro-Ger-mans, will this time make a descent, or rather an ascent, against a prepared foe if they should again hazard the adventure of kindling the blaze before the scheduled time. Elaborate defensive precautions have been taken, and tlie fortifications are now considered to be impregnable. Day and night guards are mounted, and constant vigil is kept over the stack and the inflammable ingredients with which it will be anointed. For the accommodation of the sentries, a temporary guard-house has been erected, while around the bonfire itself lias been built a high barbed-wire entanglement to baffle tlie invaders, should the guards be surprised. Little short of a raid with incendiary bombs, or bullets will rob the Auckland citizens of their peace pyre.

ROTORUA SANATORIUM. AUCKLAND, July 15

Control of the Sanatorium at Rotorua has been rc-transferred to the Tourist Department, and as soon as the necessary renovations have been effected, it will lie opened for the admission of civilian patients. Information to this effect has been received by the Auckland representative of the Tourist Department. The Sanatorium was taken over by the Public Health Department for the treatment of .sick and wounded soldiers between three and four years ago, and since that time lias been given over entirely to military needs.
