peace celebrations,
Complete arrangements have now been made for the peace celerbations by the Ross people. On Saturday morning a procession will be formed, headed by the local band and proceed ty way of the main streets to the Recreation Ground, where a full day’s sport will be held. The sports programme is a very lengthy one, and consists of quite a number of novelties. The items are arranged mostly for the juveniles who will be kept pretty busy for the day.
At 6.30 p.in., a display of fireworks will take place, these are in charge of the local fire brigade who have all arrangements well in hand. Decorations are being made through out the town, the business places liavo already got this matter underway and by Saturday morning the town should present a gay appearance. On Monday the local people will jour_ ney to Hokitika and take part in the celebrations there. Much dissatisfaction and disappointment is felt at the action of the Railway Department in refusing to carry the children free on that day, as it was generally understood, that if celebrations were not being held locally on that day the children would be jtaiken free to tjhe nearest town in which celebrations Were being held, but the children will get there all the same, the Committee meeting the expense. To finish the day a grand ball will be held in the Totara Hall, special music having been arranged for tba occasion.
FOOTBALL CLUB. The Football Club are holding a Euchre Tournament to-night (Friday) in the Totara Hall, which will he followed by a dance.
FIRE BRIGADE.
The Fire Brigade are arranging for a plain and fancy dress ball which will be held on Friday 15tli. August. Prizes will be awarded for the Lady’s and Gents’ fancy costume. Advantage will he taken of the occasion to extend a hearty welcome home to several of the members of the brigade who have been on active service and who it is hoped will be home by this date.
