STAFFORD NEWS.

(Our own correspondent.) The numerous friends of Air Joe Bnunhall of Stafford, will regret to hear of his death, which took place at Westland Hospital on Tuesday morning. He was only taken to tho institution on Saturday last. For a considerable time lie lias been practically helpless with stiff joints and rheumatism, besides being very deaf and almost blind; but lie lias been lovingly nursed by his grand-daughter—Alias iiampson—until the work got beyond lier strength.

The deceased was born in Manchester England, and was at the time of his death, within two months of 89 years of age. lie lias resided on the Coast over 53 years, and followed mining pursuits until ago and infirmity bade him cease work.

The funeral takes place from St John’s Church for the Stafford cemetery at 2.30. this (Wednesday) afternoon Ills remains will be laid in the same grave as those of his late wife who predeceased him nineteen years. The sympathy of all is extended to liis relatives in their loss of a sterling old pioneer

A meeting was held at the Stafford Literary Institute on Monday evening to make arrangements for a- welcome home social to Lieut. Hugh Linklater, and Private Fred Baretta. It was decided that the social be held in Turner’s Hall on Wednesday, July 23. All matters of detail were considered and dealt with ; the ladies undertaking that referring to refreshments, etc. —

Mr John Griffin has taken the contract to clear the gorse. blackberries, etc., in the. Stafford cemetery, and is making good progress considering the wretched weather he lias to contend with.
