EDUCATION BUILDINGS REQUIREMENTS.

WELLINGTON, July 9

The Minister of Education stated today that he had been going into the building requirements of educational institutions, and ho estimated that not less than £3,000,000 would bo required if all the demands were to be satisfied.

PRESERVATION OF SCENERY.

A deputation from the New Zealand Institute waited on the Minister in cliargo of scenery preservation and asked that the Institute should be consulted by the Government on matters pertaining to the preservation of scenery and native flora and fauna. The need for steps to be taken for the preservation of sites of historical interest was mentioned. It was stated that the stock on the native portion of Kapiti Island was spoiling the island as a sanctuary, and it was asked that the whole island should bo acquired or that the stock should be enclosed by fences.

The Minister said he would welcome any recommendation the Institute might make regarding the preservation of scenery. The questions in regard to Kapiti Island were being dealt with. As to the preservation of historical sites, he would confer with his officers and the Minister of Internal Affair's.
