The first interprovincial match this season for the New Zealand Association Football Championship (the Brown shield) was played this afternoon between Auckland and Canterbury. There were about 3000 spectators. Each side scored one goal. The play was particularly good on both sides, while Auckland’s defence was brilliant.
CABLE REPAIRED. WELLINGTON, This Day Repairs to the Pacific cable between Auckland and Norfolk Island have been effected, and direct communication will now he resumed.
TIM HER WORKERS CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, June 29. Yesterday the New Zealand Timber Worker^. Federation Conference concluded. The conference decided to request the Government to enact legislations compelling the owners of sawmills to provide a bathroom and drying room for the accommodation of the workers in the sawmills. The following resolution was carried: “That this conference is of the opinion that the time has arrived for the organisation of an Industrial Department covering all the workers in the building a’nd woodwork trades; and thi;4H 'the National Executive lie instructed to call a conference of all the workers’ organisations involved.” It was decided that the National Executive ho located at Christchurch , for the ensuing year, with Mr Hiram j Hunter as secretary. The next Conference was sot down j for Wellington in June, 1920.
