Hon. D. 11. Guthrie, Alinister of Lands, arrived by the late train on Saturday night from Rotomnnu, where he had spent a pleasant afternoon with tho settlers of the district, who had gathered in force. Yesterday afternoon the Minister took a run out to Koiterangi, and this forenoon left for Ross, where the Alinister is being on-, tertained by the Ross Borough Council; On return this afternoon deputations will be taken, and the Alinister leaves j for Christchurch to-morrow morning.! The news that the Peace Treaty had boon signed when circulated last night was received very quietly. Alention was made in the churches at the eveningt services, and the National Anthem was sung. The town was quiet this morn- | ing until ten o’clock, when the firebell i was rung by two returned soldiers. [ This was the signal for tlie hanging out j of hunting, the school children were dis- j missed, and the juveniles soon paraded j the streets. Every description of noise! making instrument, from kerosene tins, to hand-bells, was utilised with effect. Alost of the children wore carrying flags i while a large number of adults nlsoj paraded the town to mark their ap- 1 prcciation of the news.
