HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MONDAY, JUNE 16th. j The Committee met at 7.30 p.lll. Pro- 1 sent. —Messrs D. Stevenson, It. Parkin- ’ son, \V: H. Shannon, W. E. Richards, J. King, Fcddersen, S. J. Preston, and, A. Aitken (Chairman). An apology for absence was made for Mr Hickson. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

From Canterbury Schools Association forwarding annual report for year.— Received. From 0. Pamment, Kumara, applying for refund of train charges paid for Ids son’s attendance at Hokitika District High School.— Received. After discussion Air King moved that application be made to the High School board for a grant for the purpose of {laying travelling expenses. Seconded by Mr Parkinson aud carreid.

A discussion took place over the application apd ultimately on the ipotion of Messrs King and Shannon, it was resolved to ask Air Seddon, ALP., and Hons. Grimmond and Alichel, to urge the Department to allow the Committee to pay the fare of the extra mile, (this being the difference between the railage between Kumara and Grey, and Kumara and Hokitika). From Canterbury Hoard, stating acceptance of Afiss Goudie’s resignation, convoying report of Inspector JJrock on floor space at Hokitika school and suggesting alterations.—Received. Discussing the proposed alterations to the class rooms, Air Parkinson sum 1 e considered the proposal was only tinkering with the’ subject. He moved that the Board be asked, before anything was done to the internal arrangements that their architect be sent down to reconsider the whole re-arrangement of the various classes. Seconded by Air Koddersen, ami carried. A sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Parkinson, Fcddersen and Stevenson was appointed to draw cp a report showing the objections to the proposed alterations and the decided inconvenience the alterations would entail.. From same, notifying appointment of G. T. McCullough as assistant master at Hokitika.—Received. Circulars ro peace celebrations were received. From J. Brunton, (Hector), reporting as follows: J hog to submit monthly report as follows: —Average attendance 3-57, roll number 378. The attendance has been rater broken owing to the prevalence of colds. If the present average in the High School Department is maintained for another fortnight, the school will he entitled to the services of a third secondary teacher. In connection with this and the proposed exchange of rooms between the Infant and High School Departments, I would like to point out that the porch accommodation for the infants will be very limited if the exchange is effected. There was also talk of a new shelter shed to which an infant class could be taken for instruction. .If such shed could be fitted up to accommodate a High School class it would mean loss disorganisation to the whole school. I have received circulars 10 Rolls of Honour and Flags, both of which arc forwarded to you.

•Enclosed please find money to the value of 12s, which lias been in the school some time and which Aljss Wilson handed to me. The money was evident J.v collected for fuel •**. Air George McCullough, assistantmaster, entered on his duties at the beginning of the month, f have looked up Alay Nightingale’s attendances and find that she attended here for over 12 years without missing half-a-dav—an excellent record. j mara have informed me that in 1917 | hev had their railway fares refunded them by the- Sellout Committee. Last year, being an exceptional year, nothing was done, in this respect. One of my pupils may be forced by stress of circumstances to attend Grey D.H.S. to which institution free railway passes are issued to pupils from Kunuira. Could something be done to assist my Kutnara pupils ?—deceived. Jt was resolved to draw attention of the Board to the excellent records of the two scholars. From Teacher, South Spit, (-Hiss Dixon) reporting average attendance of to. ‘2 out of roll of 1(5 ; and mentioning a number of small repairs had not yet I been carried out.—Deceived. It was. resolved that My Bignoll’s attention be drawn to the delay in effecting the repairs. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Shannon and King to ask the I parents to contribute monthly sub-| scriptions towards the fuel fund. Accounts amounting to were passed for payment. In emmeetion with the proposed Houmrs Board, it was resolved to ask that all names entitled to he placed thereon h(> kindly supplied to the lleetor or .Mr J. King. The Visiting Committee, (Messrs Parkinson and Fedderson). reported on a number of matters, including the removal of* three trees on the north-east side that kept away the sun from the school and the glazing of a window broken as the result of a football striking the glass.—Deceived and approved. It was resolved to have the grass in the play-ground cut down. Messrs .Shannon and King wore appointed visitors for month.
