PUBLIC MEETING AT RIMU.
A public meeting was held in the Public Mali, Einui, on Friday evening in Accordances with hotices posted, for the purpose Of fdi'iiiing a miners association.
Mr H. A. Baucke tvas felectbd chairman, Olid j. Surgeiior secretary of the meeting. In his opening remarks the chairman stated there was so much to do, that it was difficult to know where to begin. However, among the important matters to deal with were the disadvantages that the miners had to contend with. In the first place miners’ appliances had increased in cost about 100 per cent or more, while the cost of living generally had increased about 40 per cent, bringing the purchasing power of the ■sovereign down t-o about twelve or thirteen shillings. Now as gold is held to be the standard of value, where does the product of that standard of value come in. The answer is a had last. Our prospecting system had failed completely owing to Government regulations being unworkable. Our reward system had also proved a failure. These and other matters called for action by a bodv such* as a Miners’ Association.
The chairman then invited resolutions on the matter.
Mr Willets moved that an Association be formed, to be known as the Westland Miners’ Association.—Seconded bv Mr A. Anderson and carried. The chairman then moved that members’ contributions be 2s 6d per annum. Such contributions to he used in the management of the Association and other ways that the Association limy from time to time direct.—-Seconded by Mr Willets and carried , Mr H. A. Baucke moved that this meeting elect a chairman, secretary and committee of five to draw up rules and regulation,s to be submitted to n general meeting for approval.— Seconded hv Mr J. Knowles, and carried .
The following were elected: —H. A. Baucke, chairman; J. Surgenor, secretary; Committee, Messrs W. Smith, ,T. Knowles, R. Knight, *T. McFadyen, and G. Willets.
art- H. A. Baucke moved that the Mines Department be written to for a copy of the latest Mining Regulations. —Seconded by Mr J. McFadyen and carried.
A vote of thanks to the chairman terniinted the meeting.
