REPATRIATION.

HON. MR MACDONALD SPEAKS

(PEK rniiSS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.]

WELLINGTON, This Day

Reference to the question of repatr'a. tian was made by the Hon. W. D. fe. MacDonald last night, at a dinner to delegates of the Wellington Farmers’ Provincial Union. So far as giving tho returned soldier his due, said the Minister, we know it is absolutely impossible to assess in money, the sacrifices soldiers of this country have made. Wo do not mean we are doing all that a soldier is entitled to, perhaps, but wo are doing all that the country can possibly do for him. You can only go as far as means will allow. Some gentlemen who gathered together in one of the southern cities were talking a good deal about what might he done, but they never said anything about what had been done. Every member of the Repatriation Committee was trying to do his best for the returned men. The Minister of Lands was in a very difficult position, because he had to get the right class of land for the soldier, in the right position, at the right place. To place the soldier on the land with success was no easy thing to do. Gov. eminent did not want to put soldiers on the land whore they might not be a success.
