Robson, of Stratford, a sawmiller, attended to interest the committee in a butter package. It was cylindrical in shape, made of three-ply white pine. The only defect about it, admitted by the witness, was that it would occupy a little more shipping- space. His package would be suitable for cheese also. He estimated that the cost of the package would be about one shilling, as against two shillings for the present butter box. In this way the saving made jyould compensate for cost in cargo space. To Mr Hudson: Fruit could bo packed in similar packages, which could be made at acost of abotit a shilling in two-nlv.

The “pleasing swelling” in the front of the neck which is regarded as a mark of female beauty should be regarded with suspicion, according to Dr Drennan, of Otago University. Speak ing at tlie annual meeting of the Royal Society for the Health of Women and Children, lie said that he had been impressed, in walking about the streets of Dunedin, by the of goitre, of which this swelling, freely exposed by the present fashion in females’ upper garments, was an indication. The women of New Zealand were widely affected by this disease, which was apt if neglected, to have the most serious consequences both to present and future generations, and might lead to chronic invalidism. The speaker dealt with the cause of the. disease and the reasons for its prevalence, and made several suggestions for combating it. Dr Fitcliett, speaking later on the same subject, gave point to bis remarks by looking around his audience, which was largely composed of ladies, and announcing bluntly that several of those present were affected by goitre, as bo could see by a glance at their bare necks. Both speakers stressed tho necessity for taking the matter in hand promptly, and combating the further spread of the disease.
