REPORTS SUCCESSFUL ATTACK
LONDON, May 22. General Maynard reports—We attack- < ed on the 20th, the main Bolshevik po- ! sition. The British and Allied legion j successfully co-operated. On the right | the Middlesex Regiment and on the left, i the British, and the Serbians' on tho J centre. The attack was supported by | strong artillery along the railway.. We drove out the Bolsheviks from their position at Lumbuski. It is believed the enemy is in full retreat. The pursuit is . 'continuing southward. The Bolshevik fight con- | tinues. Reports indicate the Bolshei viks contemplate the abandonment of Petrograd where internecine fighting is in progress.
ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION. NEW YORK, May 23.
The “Herald’s” Warsaw correspondent states that an unsuccessful attempt was made to assassinate Paderewski by two Bolsheviks, who drew revolvers and attempted to fire at close range. A croud prevented them from shooting, and afterwards beat the Bolsheviks till they were nearly dead, before the police arrived to rescue them.
ADVANCE ON PETROGRAD.
STOCKHOLM, May 23
The operations against Petrograd are stated to be proceeding with uniform success. There lias been a rapid advance south-west of the capital. A Russian Corps, advancing on Gatchina, captured a thousand prisoners and a number of guns, and much material. The enemy became disorganised and are making a rapid retreat. Equal success is reported on the southern shore of Finland, where the important fort of Krasnaiw resisted for some time, but then revolted, siding with the Finns.
PETROGRAD’S EXPECTED FALL. (Received this day at 9.20 a.m.) COPENHAGEN, May 14. Esthouian northern forces are within thirty miles of Petrograd and threaten * to cut the Petrograd-Moscow raiway. The fall of Petrograd is expected in a few days.
GETTING OUT. (Received this day at 9.20 a.m.) COPENHAGEN, May 15.
Petrograd authorities are advising tho population to leave the city. All Government institutions will remove on July Ist. cutting off news of the district from Soviet Russia.
