«< aacrwa—aw—ww ■»» The death occurred at Brunner of Mrs R. Elliott, who, at the advanced age of 91 years, passed away on Tuesday night at the residence of her daughter, Mrs G. Newlands. Deceased who was well known and highly esteemed, was formerly a resident of the Buller district, hut since the death of her husband 22 years ago, had resided at Brunner. The funeral of the late Mr Edward O’Connor took place yesterday afternoon, when the high esteem in which he was held was exemplified by the large gathering of (mourners. The members of the Hibernian Society attende in a body. The services at St. Mary’s Church and the graveside were conducted by Rev. Father Clancy and a great number of floral emblems were placed on the grave from sorrowing friends. , Several areas of forest-clad Crown lands in the South Island have been proclaimed “provisional State forests.” They comprise a total of 1,741,000 acres, distributed as follow :—Westland land district, 1,051,869 acres; Marlborough land district, 92,320 acres; Otago land district, 233,078 acres; Southland land district, 363,840 acres. Numerous lake native reserves and other features within the boundaries of these areas arc excluded from the effect of the proclamations. j Advice received by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company states that the company’s new steamer Otira is to load at New York in May for Australia ; and New Zealand. The Otira, a stand- i ard steamer purchased while on the stocks, is of the two-deck, with shelter ‘ deck poop type, built by Messrs liar- j land and Wolff, and is one of their “G” class steamers. She is 450 ft long, 58ft. wide and 40ft. deep, is 8000 tons, gross, 16,000 tons displacement, and 10,800 tons dead weight with a speed of 13 knots.
Tho Reefton Jockey Club proposes to its ; usual Christmas racing dates and come in after the other Coast clubs in January. It is likely that the Westland Racing Club will make application for Boxing day and the day following, in lieu of the January dates already applied for. If th« Hokitika Club secures the Xmas dates it is likely, also, that the Westland Racing Club will revive hurdle racing on the Coast by offering good stakes for one leaping event each day. The stakes generally would he augmented if tho principal holiday dates of the Christmas season are secured.
At a meeting of the West Const Rugby Union held at Greymouth last evening, it was resolved that the Westland representative be asked to notify the Hokitika and Rimu Clubs that entries close next Tuesday. It was resolved, that three competitions bo played, viz., Senior, Junior, and Ith Grade, nominations closing on Wednesday next-, and that fixtures be arranged to commence on i Saturday week. Arrangements were made for the rep. match with Inangahua at Victoria Park on Saturday. Mr T. O’Donnell was appointed referee. It was decided to appoint Mr J. F. Wilson a Vice-President of the New Zealand Rugby Union and to instruct the delegate to th? N.Z.R.U. to take certain action as to disqualifies, tions.
The spread of diphtheria at Blackball is causing growing concern. Yesterday the Christchurch Inspector of Factories, Sir Kershaw, proceeded to Blackball to investigate the sanitary conditions there. There arc now several cases of diphtheria in Greymouth. As there are a number of pupils from Blackball attending the various schools in Greymouth, the chairman of the local School Committee, Mr W. H. Parfitt, yesterday interviewed the headmaster at the State School, and, as a result, the Blackball pupils attending the High School there are being asked to remain away from the school for a time. The Westport News says.—A school girl, Winnie O’Dea, five years of age, attending the Addison’s Flat School, met with a painful accident on Friday. She was standing on the lower rail of -the fence, with her left arm round the railing. Her dress caught on a rail and i while she was trying' to release it, she slipped off the rail, giving her arm around the railings, such a wrench, that it was bent like a bow. Surgical attention was called in, and the arm h;.'d to be broken to reset it. This isthe second time little Winnie has had the arm broken, a fall front a chair about 12 months ago, breaking the same arm.
