RUGBY FOOTBALL IN HOKITIKA.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —In view* of the fact tliat the West Coast Rugby Union is soon to open the Football season it would be well if the Clubs in the Hokitika district would set matters moving in the Southern portion of the Rugby Union’s district. Last season we saw a team of young Hokitika' footballers who gave every promise with experience, of developing into a team reminiscent of the palmiest days of Hokitika football. Surely such splendid material will not bo allowed to go to waste. In the Inangaliua district there are five Clubs competing in the SubUnion’s competition, and a triangular contest between the best teams in Reefton, Groymouth and Hokitika respectively, W’ould provide some stirring games and give Rugby a good pusli-off after the war period. The West Coast Rugby Union is asking Hokitikn to send along a delegate to its next meeting on Saturday, May 3rd., and it is to be hoped that the local football enthusiasts will have some tangible scheme of competition ready by that time, so that the fixtures may be commenced as soon as possible. The league game supporters in the coal-mining centres are trying to supplant Rugby but their efforts will be futile, as there is no mention of the new game in the Buller,' Inangaliua, and West Coast Unions apart from Ruanga and Blackball a'nd a few malcontents in one Club in Greymouth. However, the fact that such efforts arc being made should stimulate the supporters of the grand old National game, in the Southern District. Hence it is up to them to wake up and hurry matters along.

I am, etc.,

RUGBYITE.
