WESTLAND RAGING CLUB.

AUtUMN MELTING

[A machine mishap during last night’s printing caused this report to be mutilated in portion of the issue. It is therefore published complete below to-day.]

Fine weather prevailed on Wednesday for the autumn meeting of the Westland Racing Club, the first held for two years owing to war conditions. The attendance though not so large as at the Christmas meeting Was very fair, a good many ;visitors being present from north and south. The course, in spite of the recent heavy weather, Was in excellent order, though somewhat heavy. The fields were not large, but the .racing Was good and the finishes were excellent, while speculation was fairly brisk the sum of £5,038 being handled by Mr Lynch and his assistants for the day, as against £6167 in 1916 and £slßl at the last autumn meeting in 1917. The officers of the Club were in attendance at their posts, and the day’s sport passed off very smoothly, the races being run off promptly and the whole management proving complete. Mr 0. H. Gorton, stipendiary steward had an easy day, only ono matter which Was deemed after enquiry, to be of a trivial nature, engaging lilies attention.. The Town Band under Conductor Richards played an excellent programme of music. The results were as follows: TRIAL HANDICAP of £SO, 6J fur-

longs : 3 Gallupin (8.11) 1 4 Ivaminolie (7.4.) 2 2—Rosevear (9.3) 3 Also started—(l) Tuticorin 7.13. Won comfortably by two lengths, Rosevear some distance away third. Time 1.30 2-5. Tote £192. RAILWAY HANDICAP, of £6O, 5} furlongs:—

s—Tyson (7.10) 1 2—'Merton (9.10) 2 I—Divorce |‘(9.l; j... 3 Also started 3—Hokitika, 7.8, and

4—Guinea Gold 7.8. After a lot of trouble at the post the field went a way with Tyson in thelead, Guinea Gold .efusing to start. Tyson held a big lead and won in hollow fashion by four lengths; Divorce half a length away. Time 1.15 1-5. Tote £707. EXPRESS HANDICAP TROT, of £SO, 1. mile: — I—Rooseveldt (scr.) 1 4—Rose Tracey (12secs.) 2 3.—4A 7 ec Pat (I2sees.) 3 Also started 2—Telltale, llsecs; 5 Rita 11. llsecs. AA’ee Pat led to the stand with Rooseveldt coming fast. At the hill Rita 11. went to the front with a run, but fell back in the straight. A great race up the straight saw Rose Tracey who took command, break right on the post as Rooseveldt got up to win by half a length, with Wee Pat a neck away third, Rita H. three lengths further back. Time 2.25 1-5. Tote £579. AUTUMN HANDICAP of £IOO, 1* miles:— 1— Lady Middleton (9.13) 1 2 Royal Dragoon (8.3) 2 3 Mollymawk (7.13) 3 The only starters. From a level start Lady Middleton showed the way and led throughout by a length or more. Royal Dragoon came in the straight, but the leader held the advantage and won a good race by a length, with something to spare. Time 2.24 1-5. Tote £733.

PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, of £6O 5 furlongs:— 1— Merton (9.10) 1 2 Tyson (8.6) 2 4—Hokitika (7.1) 3 Also started 3—Guinea Gold, (7.8.) After some trouble at the start owing to Tyson and Guinea Gold’s refusal to face the barrier, Tyson got the best of the start and led tjll inside the distance. At the entrance to the straight Merton came with a fast run and in spite of being carried to the outside of the course by Tyson managed to get up in the la'st few few strides to win by a short head, Hokitika three lengths away. Time 1.7 4-5. Tote £706. The rider of Tyson (Faulkner) was subsequently cautioned by the stewards for careless riding. DOMINION HANDICAP, TROT of £6O, IV miles:— 4—Topsy Wallace (7secs.) 1 3 Palmdale (4secs) 2 I—Trixie Adair (3secs.) 3 Also started 3—Miss Marion (4 secs behind scratch) s—lnquisitive (7secs). 6—Smithy Dillon (9socs.) Palmdale soon took charge and kept at the head of affairs. Topsy Wallace put in a challenge and managed to get up at the distance winning by a length, the third twenty lengths away pulling up. Time 3.46. Tote £783. HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP of £7O seven furlongs:— 1— Divorce (9.11) 1 4 Royal Dragoon (9.5) 2 3—Gallupin (10.4) 3 Also started s—Tyne (9.1); —2 Kaminohe (8.2). Gallupin .made the running with Royal Dragoon second. Entering the straight Divorce moved up from third place and a great finish saw the latter win by a head Royal Dragoon being a head in front of Gallupin. Time 1.39 1-5. Toto £702. ELECTRIC HANDICAP TROT of 050 If miles:— I 2 Palmdale (l'Osees.) 1 5 Topsy Wallace (Bsecs.) 2 [ I—Rose Tracev <lssees.) 3 ! Also started 3—. Miss Marion (4secs) and 4 inquisitive (13sees.). Rose Tracey hold the lead in -the first round, Topsy Wallace next. The latter then went to the front and looked a likely winner, with Palmdale coming fast behind Rose Tracey. A great finish saw Hose Tracey leave her feet and then right on the post Topsy Wallace propp-' od arid Palmdale won an exciting fin- 1 ish by half a length, third horse a; length away. Time 3.11.
