The estimate presented to the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard meeting to-day provides for a gross expenditure during year 1919-20 of £97,847, less estimated receipts, other than subsidies and levies, of £28,430. leaving £69,417 to be found. Of this amount £38,115 is apportioned among the local authorities, while the amount due to the Board by way of subsidies from the Consolidated Fund is placed at £31,302. AIRING GRIEVANCES. WELLINGTON, This Day. At the annual meeting of the Returned Soldiers Association, a resolution was carried against the closing of hotels when a troopship arrives, seeing that the protection was intended only for unfit men, all of whom had now arrived. v

Donald, treasurer, stated that the City Council had given a site for a: soldiers’ club at a nominal rental. A commencement will be made on the new building, which is to contain sixty to eighty bedrooms, within a few weeks. A proposal to donate one thousand pounds was referred to a Committee.

Much feeling was expressed owing to the decision of a number of business men deciding to continue business on Anzae Day. A resolution was canned asking Government to declare the day a close holiday; also that lists of offending firms be published. Anzac Day is being observed as a partial holiday. Some business firms are closed all day, others from mid-day, and others for a short period to enable their employees to attend the memorial service in the afternoon. A NARROW ESCAPE. The Borough Council Recently appointed a local resident as Town Cleric from applicants who included several returned soldiers seeking municipal appointments.

The Returned Soldiers Association were incensed and wrote to individual enquiring as to how they voted. Several who were favourable to soldier candidates replied, but the majority declined to disclose their voting which was taken in Committee. The Association passed a vote of censure on Councillors and passed a motion that Councillors being servants of the Public Service should conduct the business in open council.
