A MOTOR HOG. LEVIN, This Day

While cycling ifn Oxford street at 8 o’clock last night, a well-known local master tailor, R. Frechtling, was run down by an unknown motor car. Tho driver did not stop after the accident, but full speeded down tho main road, dragging the bicycle entangled in the car. Frechtling sustained . a bad fracture of the skull and was removed to Otaki Hospital. His condition is critical.

Cabinet lias decided that Anzac Day this year shall be observed as a full holiday. Nothing is decided as to the permanent observance in future years.

A PECULIAR FATALITY

WELLINGTON, This Day

News of what is believed to have been the explosion of a German mine, resulting in the death of two men, was received by the Commissioner of Police. The message states.—“ Early yesterday Ryan, a farmer of Woodleigli, 88 miles south of Auckland, heard a loud explosion. On investigation of the cause lie found the remains of two men and several head of cattle on the beach. It is surmised the explosion was caused by a mine washed ashore, although on inspecting the locality Ryan found no trace of any metal. The two men were drovers taking cattle along the beach.

lUNICIPAL TRAWLING

AUCKLAND, April 22. J Before the Industries Committee, J. B. Paterson gave evidence on municipal trawling. The City Council opened a retail shop with a capital of £20,000 borrowed by the ratepayers’ approval. There had undoubtedly been a reduction in the retail price oi fish, but were it was thought fish could bo landed at €5 per ton, the cost was about £lO per ton. At present the Council’s venture was not profitable. It had been handicapped by tho trawlers being commandeered for mine sweeping.
