ANZAC DAY OBSERVANCE
Friday, 25th. inst., being Anzac Day, the occasion will be marked with special observation. In the forenoon thoie will be Memorial services in All Saints St. Mary’s, and the Presbyterian Churches. There will be a military church parade under Major Jeff lies, and beaded by the band, the military procession including Returned Soldiers, Veterans, Territorials and Cadets will march from the Drill Slied to the respective churches. At noon the Westland Patriotic Society entertain the returned soldiers at a reunion luncheon to be held at'the Supreme Hall, where Mr J. J. Mclntosh of the Red Lion Hotel will do the catering. The whole of the returned men of the district including the recently arrived men and veterans are invited to attend. Captain Charters of the Repatriation Department, himse a returned officer, lias accepted an invitation to -be present and will be invited to address t-lie men on the repatriation proposals. At 2.30. o’clock there will be a public fathering in Hamilton Street where public addresses will be given by the Mavor, County Chairman, Hon H. - Michel and J. Grimmond M.L.C s an others. The soldiers, territorials, band etc. will form up in Camp street at 2 15. o’clock and march through Reve Street by way of Weld and SeweU streets to Hamilton Street. A feature of the meeting of the Ha- \ -Returned Soldiers’ Association rr*} motion that the annual Dominion Conference be asked to request the Government to make A 12 Dav a statutory holiday. Members stated that the local Association views with alarm the number of sports meet ■J 8 and other attractions being held on Anzac Day, which H considers should be kept sacred. A motion was passed that the conference should dis cuss the advisability of securing a more solemn recognition of the daj.
