ON A RAILWAY TRAIN.
PASSENGER attacks guard
WELLINGTON, February 25
While the Napier-Welliugton cx-i press was travelling between Paekakariki and Plimmerton on Saturday last, an incident occurred that went near to ending in a tragedy. Going through the train in the course of his ordinary duties, Guard Stewart, noticed a
drunken passenger standing on the platform of one of tlie carriages. A request to move inside was ignored, and after a few words the obstreperous one gripped Stewart tightly by the throat. A willing struggle ensued on the platform, and if the gates had not been fastened the probability is that both men would have fallen overboard. Eventually with the assistance of a soldier the guard managed to overcome his adversary but not before tbe latter had put his arm through a window.
The sequel to the exciting affray was heard in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when George F. Fraser was charged before Mr F. V. Fraser S.M., with wilfully damaging the pane of
glass valued at 12/6 and assaulting Guard Marshall Stewart. In imposing a penalty of £lO with costs, Mr Fraser said he had determined to protect railway guards and other officials holding responsible positions. In the present case the accused should consider himself very fortunate that he was not called upon to answer a charge of manslaughter. Any interference with tramway conductors or railway guards meant in- j terference with the public and I consequent? danger to human life. If the accused did not pay the fine he would have to go to prison for one month and in addition to the penalty imposed, he would have to make good the damage. Remember, if you want to get rid of heavy dull feeling in the head, which accompanies Nasal Catarrh, just take a good inhalation of “ Nazol ’’ through a Nazol Inhaler and get immediate relief L delightful drink, WDI.FIi’K SCHNAPPS «i|h lemon and soda-water. When “TAN-.OL’’ comes in, dullness goes out. A splendid polisher for floors and furniture, leather and tan shoes.
