IN SOUTH WESTLAND.
COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S VISIT
(By Tolcgraph.—Special to Guardian.) lIA A ST, February 26. Tlie County Chairman and Party left to-day, crossing by Haast Pass to Otago. The Chairman’s visit to the southern district has been accomplished in good weather only a few hours of rain being encountered. Tlie settlers of the district were glad to see the visitors, who have looked closely into the requirements. Grazing is the chief industry of the far south and the stock is looking well. Mustering is now going on for the Wataroa sale next month. Of late years it has greatly improved in quantity and quality and large mobs of prime Westland beasts are available for the market.
I’he telephone line in the far south requires a complete overhaul and the Postal Department has promised attention to the important matter, which is of such vital interest to settlers. Another matter for necessary attention is the more important, mail service, to which tlie Chairman has been urging attention at Headquarters. The roads are in need of a general overhand. The want of labour is the cause of the neglect, but it is expected this will now be overcome. Various large works require to be completed to enable the district to progress more rapidly, in respect to which the Chairman will put important proposals before the County on his return to Hokitika next week. The election of a new Advisory Committee for Bruce Bay district will be hold at Jacobs River on March 29th.
