The official return, just to hand, with regard to the provision and maintenance of the New Zpalami Expeditionary Forces during the world war, shows that the total number oi’ men mobilised in camp was 124,211 3 7036 of these being
for home service. The actual number sent away on active service, including the Samoan contingent, was 100,444. Tile total number of voluntary recruits was 91,941, while 32,270 were sent into camp under the Military Service Act. The total number called up under that Act was 135,184, and of these 0732 were still under orders to proceed to camp when thp Armistice was signed. The 100,444 troops sent abroad are classified as under :

Total seat abroad 100,444 There were in training in the New Zealand camps for active service at the date of the Armistice 9924 men, besides 3,333 then employed tin home service. In addition, 3370 New Zealanders are known to be enlisted abroad—l 279 in the British Forces and 2091 in the Australian Forces. The total number of British honours and awards bestowed on officers, 1i.0.0.’s and men belonging t<> or serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force up to October 31st, 1918 was 4234 and the number of foreign decorations was 100, making a. grand total of 4389. Wastage of forces. The total wastage of men on active service was 41,435, the actual losses sustained by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force from one cause or another being stated as follows: Killed and Died 16,302

The total wastage of lit men, both while training in New Zealand and while serving abroad, was -thus 52,768, or nearly 50 per cent of the troops mobideiul, of whom 16,302 died abroad and 507 ’in New Zealand camps. Of this 507. more than half, namely 290—-died in 1918; and of these no fewer than 2(38 succumbed to the recent influenza epidemic.
