SOUTH AFRICA.

THE NATIONALIST AGITATION

F AUSTRALIAN &’ N.Z. OABLB AfiSOOIAIION] CAPE TOWN, Teb. 12. In the Assembly, Colonel Cresswell, the Labour leader, moved an amendment to Sir. T. W. Smartt’s motion recognising that the status of the Lnion within the British Commonwealth secures for the people protection, power £o deal with national development, together with security from external dangers, and that such status has been iicceptpd by the two white races as a settlement of racial quarrels. The per- . - manent welfare of the people demands ■* the unremitting attention of Parliament to djomstic, social, and economic problems. The House therefore records its conviction that the present movement for the abrogation of the Union jvill infallibly endanger the peace of the vountry, and result in the continued ieglect of domestic concerns, with disastrous consequences to the future u ellbeing of the people. In the Senate, the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs moved an identical re-, solution. The Acting-Premier, speaking in the Assembly yesterday, declared that the Republican movement was an act of dishonour, and would inevitably lead to civil strife. If objection were felt, to the Union, it should have been expressed when the Union was formed. It was now their duty to abide l>y the Act.
