CONCILIATION CONFERENCE
Yesterday a’ conference was opened at the Greymouth Courthouse, under the persidency of Mr Newton, Conciliation Commissioner to deal with the between the employers and workers in the West Coast sawmilling industry. The delegates of the parties were:—sawmill owners, Messrs Callwell D. Tennent and Bissel; Workers: Messrs F. Turley, (Union Secretary) Move, and Topp. The sitting was a protracted one, not adjourning until after 11 p.m., when it was decided to defer the deliberations until to-day.
Questioned by our reporter after the sitting, the Conciliation Commissioner expressed himself hopefully regarding the prospects. Although the whole of the details had not been settled, a good deal had been already disposed -f by the conference. The negotiations were promising very well indeed, and Mr Newton said he considered that there was no reason to hope for a complete agreement being reached. He pointed out that the decisions of the conference had of course, to be ratified bv both parties organisations, and he therefore would not touch on details but the conference promised to have good results.
