SIR LIONEL HALSEY DECLINES. Paris, Jan 29.

Sir Joseph Cook (Australian Min* ister for the Navy) is still in London, where he is negotiating for an admiral foi the Australian navy and a captain for the Naval Board.

Sir Lionel Halsey has rejected the appointment as Admiral of the Fleet, because ot the inadequacy of the salary. The salary is £9OO, which is less than that paid on the China station. Others put forward a similar objection.

Sir Lionel Halsey would accept the position if the remuneration were higher.
