MONEY FOR PEACE CELEBRATIONS. JABOUIUTES’ ADVERSE VIEW. [L*EB PBESS ASSOCIATION. COPYBIGHT.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 10. At a meeting of tlie City Council to-night a Committee recommended the Council to spend £IOOO On erection of Arches, poles and bunting, and also an additional £IOOO on illustration in connection with Peace celebrations.
Councillor Sullivan (one of tho Labour members) objectcu i.o spending so much money in this way, as lie would sooner give the £2OOO to the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
Cr. Herbert (another Labour member) said there were hundreds of parents in this city who would hate the jubiliation for their sons, would never conic back to them. Ho rather favoured a voluntary competitive display by children and business concerns. He moved as an amendment that the sum to be spent on peace celebrations be £IOOO.
The Mayor said the scheme could be ■utilised also for the visits of Lord ,Tollicoe and the Prince of Wales. The Committee's report was adopted, with one dissentient.
