Tuk bridging of the «outli Westland rivers is likely to be taken up actively by the Government from now on. The position appears to be that Evans Creek will bo bridged very shortly and a contract is to be prepared for bridging the Little Waitana river. A survey is now in hand tor a bridge site at Little Wanganui river and enough money has been voted to start the work which will be 01 some magnitude costing probably not less than £4,000. As far ns, the road goes at present to Waiho Gorge these works will complete the more costly ol‘ the bridgo structures required, but there are other smaller streams —uotably the Waitangi and Tatare —which require bridging also fn addition to the sums already voted for bridges in .South Westland probably another £IO,OOO would he ample to meet the demands as far south as the Waiho Gorge. This is not a large sum for the valuable return to accrue. The main south road is kept in good order and it is the river crossings only which hamper and delay traffic. It is a long stretch of road and that brought its more permanent use, would be a great factor in regard to tlio development of the south. The time seems to be ripe to concentrate on bridges for the main south road and if the people are united about tho matter and back up their representatives the district should be in a fair way to secure tno great boon for (ho material advancement of tho south country.
